FPA was founded in 1999 by Diane Neimann. In 2008, Teresa Bonner and long-term FPA employee Ellen George acquired the firm.

Sara Whitehead joined Family Philanthropy Advisors as Program Associate in 2008. Prior to that, Sara worked as an Office Manager for Hearth Connection, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people with long histories of homelessness move into and prosper in supportive housing.
Sara has substantial experience in administration, research and philanthropy, working seven years as a researcher for Wyatt & Jaffe, an executive search firm, and six years as executive assistant to the chief executive of The McKnight Foundation, where her responsibilities included supporting the work of the foundation’s international Collaborative Crop Research Program. Sara also has worked in the Development Office at Columbia University’s Teachers College and helped develop educational programs for The New Yorker magazine.
Sara has a Bachelor’s degree in English from Hunter College and a Master’s degree in the philosophy of education from Columbia University’s Teachers College.
Sara practices yoga and enjoys traveling.
